Bad and Nasty

I tried out a new monologue, “The Boardroom,” at the Kitchen Theatre on Sunday night as part of the national Bad And Nasty Initiative. It has been a while since I performed my own work, but this cabaret was a great event: eclectic, enthusiastic, positive, funny, and thought-provoking. And we packed the house. You can read more about this national arts as activism project here:

Blaine Quarnstrom Playwriting Series

I’m really thrilled to be heading to Mississippi to be this year’s Blaine Quarnstrom Playwriting fellow. I am looking forward to working with theatre students and English students on character, dialogue, subtext, and ways to get the most out of settings in your writing. Super fun. While I am there, there will be readings of several of my short plays and of a piece from The Unfortunates. Readings and Q and As are open to the public, though the workshops are for enrolled students only.

The Vampire of The Grotto

My ‘new’ 19th century Gothic drama, ‘The Vampire of The Grotto,’ was presented as a staged reading at Cornell last month for the AGIT lab series. A hearty thanks to all the actors for putting up with constant rewrites and for bringing so much to the work and the process! And to Planche, Byron, and Polidori, for the first bite. If any other universities or theaters would like to welcome this play over their threshold, please get in touch.

Strike Down Under!

Strike is going to be part of the Short and Sweet Festival in Sydney, this January. This is the fourth of my plays to be part of this festival, which rightly claims to be the biggest little play fest in the world. It’s playing at the fabulous New Theatre again, from Jan to March. Short and Sweet usually promises a really interesting and varied line-up of well produced shorts, so worth a look.

Ten Minute Plays Here and There

Here’s a snapshot of recent short play activity: For those near Boston, keep an eye out for the Boston SLAM, a fast and furious short play festival and contest Dec 2, 3 and 4, in which a new play of mine, “At Delphi,” will participate. Also in Boston, The Boston Play Cafe will do a reading of a brand new short piece, “The Sculpture Gallery,” early next year. Two short plays recently closed, “Skulls” for West Coast One Acts in Florida and “Turtle Beach,” at Cornell. “Skulls,” is now being adapted to film. And across the globe, my meta-comedy “Strike” has been short-listed (from a pool of  600+ submissions) for the Short and Sweet Festival in the city I still think of as my spiritual home, and about as far away from Boston as you can get…Sydney.
